MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 9600 Pro, a new flagship smartphone processor built on TSMC’s 2nm process. The chip pairs an eight-core CPU with the NPU 1090, a lower-power AI processing system, LPDDR6 memory support and UFS 5.0 storage.
The interesting part is not simply the smaller process node. MediaTek is using the new silicon to push more AI processing toward the phone itself. The company claims the NPU delivers 51% faster LLM prefill performance and 55% better token-generation performance per watt than its previous flagship generation. It also says the chip can support on-device AI models of up to 30 billion parameters.
For you, that could eventually mean faster local assistants, summarization and other AI features without sending every task to the cloud. But the hardware alone does not guarantee that experience. Phone makers and software developers still decide which models and AI features actually run locally.
The same applies to battery life. A more efficient 2nm chip gives manufacturers additional power headroom, but they can spend that advantage on performance, AI workloads or lower consumption. Real-world battery and thermal results will depend on the finished smartphone.
The first devices are close: Vivo’s X500 series is scheduled for September 21 in China, while OPPO has confirmed a Find X10 Pro Max using the chip for international markets. Independent testing will ultimately show how MediaTek’s claims translate into sustained everyday performance.
